All public forests and forests in the Flemish Ecological Network must be managed according to these criteria. Thus, Flemish forest legislation lays the foundations for high-quality and multifunctional forest management, making the achievement of an FSC certificate a very achievable goal. In addition to FSC, there are also other forest certification systems such as the PEFC label. FSC group certificate of the Nature and Forests Agency: an achievable goal The forest index in Flanders is low (13%) and the forest and forest ownership structure is highly fragmented. Within FSC certification, there is the possibility of group certification. This system unites a number of forest managers who are certified as a group. The benefits speak for themselves: responsibilities are shared, as are the administrative and financial burdens. Since late 2006, the Nature and Forests Agency has had an FSC group certificate, in which the agency takes on the organization and management of the group certificate. When you as a forest manager meet the FSC criteria, you can become a member of the group and in that way obtain an FSC label for your forest. Your wood then comes to market as FSC-labelled wood. Thanks to the agency, you obtain an FSC label in a simple way. The support from the group management reduces the administrative and financial burdens to the absolute minimum.
